Recently, the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City approved the Green Energy Program through 2015, emphasizing the goal of developing “clean electricity” from new and renewable energy sources, accounting for over 1% of the city’s total electricity consumption capacity, equivalent to 48MW. Is this modest 1% target achievable?

Promoting Renewable Energy Development in Ho Chi Minh City

To successfully implement the Green Energy Program, Ho Chi Minh City needs to foster the development of renewable energy sources and encourage the use of environmentally friendly energy. Raising public awareness about energy conservation and green energy is essential for achieving these goals.

Adopting Technology and Enhancing Energy Efficiency

The People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City emphasizes the importance of management, technical, and scientific measures to reduce energy consumption. Improving the efficiency of research and development for renewable and clean energy sources helps protect the environment and meet the demand for sustainable energy.

Electricity Savings Target by 2015

The Green Energy Program of Ho Chi Minh City also aims to achieve a 2% reduction in electricity consumption compared to commercial electricity output from now until 2015. In 2012, the city set a goal of saving 400 million kWh of electricity.

Challenges in Developing Green Energy

The major issue now is whether Ho Chi Minh City can achieve the goal of green and clean energy accounting for over 1% of its total consumption capacity. One of the main obstacles is the high investment cost and the difficulty in capital recovery. “Clean energy” projects, such as solar and wind power, still face significant challenges in penetrating the market.

Solar Energy Usage in Ho Chi Minh City

Statistics show that, to date, hardly any government offices in Ho Chi Minh City use solar energy. Only a few households and businesses have boldly invested in it. Notably, in April 2012, Intel Vietnam inaugurated a solar power system at its Assembly and Test Plant in the Saigon Hi-Tech Park, with a capacity of 200kWp.

Wind Power Project in Can Gio

One notable project is the proposal to implement a 200 MW wind power project in Can Gio District, with a total investment of 10 trillion VND. If successfully implemented, this project promises to provide Ho Chi Minh City with a new renewable energy source.

Energy Development from Waste

Ho Chi Minh City has made initial strides in developing electricity from waste at the Go Cat landfill, with a capacity of 2 MW. Similar projects at the Da Phuoc and Dong Thanh landfills also have potential for further development, helping to reduce CO2 emissions and save waste collection costs.

Conclusion: Green Energy for the Future of Ho Chi Minh City

To ensure the robust development of green energy in Ho Chi Minh City, the key lies in reducing investment costs and building a clear roadmap. The city needs to implement supportive and incentive policies to encourage investors to participate, making Ho Chi Minh City a pioneer in green energy development across the country.
